As Jasmine Williams crossed the stage, Fire Chief Allyn Wright grasped her arm and raised her hand along with his. “I always do this,” he said, and proclaimed, “Female!”

A pipe burst early Wednesday morning on downtown Temple Street, shutting down water service to an entire block while crews scrambled to fix the problem.
With the help of Bruce Springsteen, two cups of coffee and a turkey burger, Reinaldo Rivas pushed through a 15-hour shift preparing for Winter Storm Hercules.
“This is nothing,” he said as the first plows of the evening began to clear the streets.

A Seattle pilot visiting colleges with his 17-year-old son missed the Tweed airport runway and crashed into two homes, leaving two families mourning in the wake of a fatal flight.
“No, I’m not home,” Malachi Benson told a caller as he sat in the Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center. With two newspapers folded neatly in front of him, Benson had left his home’s broken air conditioning to seek relief from the heat.
