The Board of Alders approved a resolution that will allow Mayor Toni Harp to accept a $1 million federal grant aimed at making Newhallville safer, but not without passing a separate resolution that attaches caveats for city staff going forward.

As Carmen Mendez drove down Winchester Avenue and turned left on Read Street, her boss, Serena Neal-Sanjurjo, proved that she was no stranger to Newhallville.
Mayor Toni Harp, who has been urging New Haven to “buy New Haven” for the holidays, did some of her own local shopping in hiring a new chief for her neighborhoods anti-blight agency.
The man who brought a detailed view of cities from around the world to the Hill neighborhood has a new mission: helping New Haveners bring their own city into view.

Mayor Toni Harp’s high heels have to be ready for anything — one minute she might be clicking her way through City Hall, the next minute navigating the construction site of the 13-story office tower. So it made sense that the first stop on a new shop-local initiative delivered her to Thom Brown.
The Harp administration has decided to sell five city-owned properties to five different kinds of buyers representing five different approaches to rebuilding neighborhoods.

Old Story: New Haven provides high-paying jobs for the suburbs while housing and servicing the majority of the region’s low-income population.
New Story: The city’s high income areas are outperforming the suburbs in quality of life and inclusion of different social groups, and may serve as a new model for shared prosperity.
Michael Collins and Dee Johnson were glad to hear the city’s finding a buyer to rescue a vacant house on their block — and they hope the right kind of buyer ends up with it.

From Elm Street downtown to Russell Street in the Heights, the city plans to spend up to $1.7 million rebuilding stretches of nine sidewalks, ranging from 75 to 2,400 feet long.
Employees of New Haven government’s neighborhood development and anti-blight agency went home for the weekend with the status of their boss still unresolved.

That’s the name, at least for now, of the colorful, graffiti-esque collaborative mural that will enliven the Humphrey Street underpass beneath I‑91 and connect the Jocelyn Square and East Rock neighborhoods.
