A Virginia developer wants to turn a bleak old factory property a block from Westville Village into a luxury apartment complex looking something like this. First he needs approval for a permit from the City Plan Commission when it meets in an emergency session Tuesday morning. Neighbors are watching with a wary eye.

Bacon Cheeseburgers To Go?

Anthony Reid and Rasheen Henry (above) are psyched about the prospect of a Wendy’s coming to this vacant corner of Winthrop and Whalley avenues. Merchants and adult neighbors have a different vision of how Whalley should develop. They’re fighting chains like Wendy’s. And the city might seize the property before Wendy’s can serve a burger.

Double Thanks

Thanksgiving arrived early, and twice, at Casa Oto√ɬ±al this year. The elderly housing complex in the Hill served a festive holiday dinner on Wednesday so that people who have other places to go Thursday, like sisters Sarah Claybourne and Marjorie Higgs (at left and right in photo), could celebrate the holiday with their Casa community, too.

When Frank Met Rose

After 46 years, 91-year-old Frank Scialabba still says hello to Rose Cimino every day. Retired at 91, he comes to Rose’s and her husband’s Grand Avenue bakery, puts on a smock, and packages fennel biscuits called tartalle.” And he brings Rose her daily joke. It never fails to crack her up. This is a love story —” not a romantic love story, not a story about marriage, but a story about two friends from Fair Haven, a generation apart, who have remained a central part of each other’s daily lives.

Not Wild About Harry’s

Neighbors say Harry’s Package Store at the commercial heart of Beaver Hills has been a mess for years. Especially the lot around it, pictured here. The city’s set to fine the owner $100 a day. The owner — who runs upscale restaurants elsewhere in town — says he’s tried to make the property nice but unreasonable neighbors have stopped him.

Katrina Drop-Off Stations

Ten City of New Haven Fire Stations have been designated as drop-off centers for relief supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims. Fire Stations will accept donations of bottled water, non-perishable ready-to-eat foods, batteries, tarps, & tents.√Ǭ† Donations will then be sent to the Goffe Street Armory, as part of Governor’s Jodi Rell’s statewide response plan involving National Guard Armories.√Ǭ† The Fire Stations will accept donations from 8 – 6 until further notice. The 10 stations are: Central Station – 952 Grand Ave., Engine 5 – 826 Woodward Ave., Engine 6 – 125 Goffe St., Engine 8 – 350 Whitney Ave., Engine 9 – 120 Ellsworth Ave., Engine 10 – 412 Lombard St., Engine 11 – 525 Howard Ave., Engine 15 – 105 Fountain St., Engine 16 – 510 Lighthouse Rd., Engine 17 – 73 East Grand Ave.
