16-Year-Old Charged In Carjacking

Police arrested a 16-year-old New Havener for allegedly carrying out an armed carjacking in Hamden.

The carjacking took place Tuesday on Helen Street.

A 26-year-old man was warming up his car at his residence there when a BMW pulled up and two males exited.

One of them approached the driver and pointed a firearm at him” while the other male searched the vehicle,” Hamden spokesperson Capt. Ronald Smith wrote in a release issued Thursday.

The pair made off with the vehicle and the man’s wallet and cell phone. The man was not injured.

Hamden detectives investigated the case with New Haven cops. Information … led them” to the 16-year-old’s New Haven home, Smith wrote. Further investigation revealed the the juvenile was in fact responsible of the carjacking and that he had threatened the victim with a weapon. Evidence of the crime was located at the juvenile’s residence.”

Charged with first-degree robbery and larceny the 16-year-old was released to his guardian” and is due in juvenile court on Jan. 25.
