1,800 Lost Power

Around 1,800 locations lost power Tuesday afternoon due to a problem on Grand Avenue, according to United Illuminating.

UI spokesman Michael West said crews discovered that a wire had burned” on Grand Avenue and were on sit fixing it around 2:30 p.m.

By 3:58 p.m. UI reported that power had been restored to all but 125 customers.

Those losing power included Metropolitan Business Academy, where a student reported that a back-up generator failed as well. But that was only momentary. Reports school system Chief Operating Officer Will Clark: The generator at Metro was functioning after some brief technical issues that
were addressed immediately. Other schools had limited emergency lighting and building leaders did a fabulous job managing the students and staff. Our Transporation, Facilities and Security teams were on site at each location with the support of the police department. Power was restored to all
locations about an hour and a half after it went out and all schools were able to progress with dismissal as scheduled.”
