2 Crashes In 24 Hours On Townsend Ave.

103009_bmw1.jpgIndependent reader Moira Cotlier-Cassell sent in these details about a car crash she narrowly avoided at the Corner of Townsend Avenue and Tuttle Drive in the East Shore. Her neighbor said that it was the second area crash in 24 hours.

I just took a walk with my dog down Townsend Ave. No sooner did I take a picture of some discarded police line tape leftover from yesterday’s accident on Townsend and Hervey — and post it on Facebook with a snarky comment about being glad I wasn’t walking the dog when it happened — did I just narrowly miss getting whomped at the corner of Tuttle and Townsend.

There was a terrible crash there today, around 3:45 PM, give or take a few minutes. I had just turned down Tuttle and waved to my neighbor Andrew who drove by, when I suddenly heard two crashes. I turned and saw some of what I’ve attached here. I took the pics with my cellphone.

According to people whose backs weren’t turned like mine, the BMW [pictured] was headed toward Main and was trying to pass the city bus, which I am assuming was stopped. The silver car apparently came around the corner from the block of Tuttle on the other side of Townsend and slammed into the BMW, sending it across the street and facing the opposite direction. The silver car then careened into the city bus.

There were multiple injuries. The passenger of the silver car suffered serious head wounds. No word if they were buckled. The BMW driver apparently suffered some serious neck and back injuries.

Townsend was closed between Rayham and Tuttle. I ran into a resident of Kneeland Rd, Bob Trotta. He was willing to be quoted in the NHI, and said, This is the second accident in a day. The police are out here frequently (enforcing speed limits), but we need more lights. It’s a state highway up to Ft. Hale Rd., I think, and it needs more lights.”

He also commented that he was one of the first on the scene of yesterday’s accident.

I am just counting my lucky stars and thanking my guardian angel for nudging me out of the way a few seconds ahead of the accident.
