Ray Cullom, who began his tenure as Long Wharf Theatre’s managing director in May 2009, has resigned.

We just accepted the resignation of Ray Cullom as managing director of the theater,” Mary Pepe, chair of the organization’s Board of Trustees, said Monday afternoon.

He notified me last week of his intention,” Pepe said, adding that her understanding is that Ray’s opportunity is in producing and presenting theatrical works,” though she doesn’t know the specifics.”

Previous to his tenure at Long Wharf Theatre, Cullom was executive director of the Bethesda Theatre, in Maryland (a Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment property), and, before that, was managing director of Theatre Row, a group of off-Broadway theaters run by the 42nd Street Development Corporation in New York. Cullom’s predecessor at Long Wharf Theatre was Joan Channick, who is currently working as associate dean at the Yale School of Drama.

Pepe said Long Wharf Theatre’s Board of Trustees would, in the coming weeks, come up with short- and long-term plans for the organization’s future.
