Firefighters Rescue 3

Firefighters rescued two adults and a child who had climbed out of a third-story window to escape a fire on Dixwell Avenue early Tuesday.

Here’s what happened, according to Fire Chief Michael Grant:

A small fire started in a second-floor closet of 265 Dixwell Ave. around 12:30 a.m.

Firefighters from the Goffe Street station rushed over to the building, which has a storefront on the first floor and apartments on the upper two floors. No flames were visible from the outside; there was plenty of smoke inside.

A man, a woman and a child had climbed out of a third-story window to escape the smoke. They stood on top of a bay window from the floor below.

We put ladders up to get them down,” Grant said. They were in no immediate danger. They could have been in danger [eventually].” (He didn’t have information on the child’s age or gender.)

Firefighters put out the closet fire within about five minutes.

The rescued trio was unhurt. No firefighters were hurt. A second-floor occupant exposed to the smoke went to the hospital to be checked for injuries.

Sadie Group LLC assumed ownership of the 4,869 square-foot building, which was built in 1900, from Charles H. Brewer in 2010, according to city land records. Sadie Group’s manager is Charles Brewer II of New Haven, according to the secretary of the state’s commercial database. The building is near the corner of Henry Street.
