Calling All Subs

Connecticut State Department of Education

New Haven Public Schools is looking for college students and other community members to become substitute teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Those without a bachelor’s degree qualify for short-term substitute roles, where substitutes switch between classrooms. Community members with bachelor’s degrees qualify for long-term substitute teaching, where they fill one teacher’s spot for 40 days or more.

Others working on getting teacher certificates can get started without the certificate in roles where the state is experiencing a teacher shortage, like Special Education, bilingual education and high school and middle school math.

The Connecticut State Department of Education has been advertising these flexible staffing” strategies to help districts function as teachers get sick or request to stay home from in-person teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of Dec. 9, New Haven schools was hiring for three different types of substitute teacher roles and 41 teaching positions that would normally require a certification, including four bilingual teaching and five Special Education roles.
