The New Haven Symphony Orchestra has named Elaine Carroll the organization’s new executive director.
“Elaine’s appointment was confirmed by unanimous vote at a special session of the Board of Directors late last month,” according to a press release issued by the organization on Friday.
Burton Alter, president of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Directors, was quoted in the press release as saying: “Elaine has proven herself as interim executive director and development director with the NHSO. … I join with our Board, staff, and Music Director William Boughton in looking forward to many years of continued success for the NHSO under Elaine’s leadership.”
As was reported by the New Haven Independent in May, Carroll assumed the role on an interim basis on June 1, after Natalie Forbes, who’d served as executive director for six years, vacated the position.
The executive directorship was filled through a search conducted on behalf of the organization by the Washington, D.C.-based Catherine French Group.
Carroll was quoted in the press release as saying: “Working with the talented musicians, Board, and staff of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra this past year has been such an inspiring experience. … I am honored to continue the NHSO’s tradition of delivering artistic excellence and community engagement to the Greater New Haven region.”
“Last season,” according to the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s press release, Carroll “spearheaded the NHSO’s successful Bold New Vision Campaign, which garnered over $500,000 in pledges for audience development and education initiatives at the Symphony.”
A graduate of the University of North Carolina, where she earned an undergraduate performance degree (flute), and New York University, where she earned a master’s degree in performing-arts administration from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Carroll previously served as general manager of the Stamford Symphony (Stamford, Conn.) and executive director of the Westchester Philharmonic (White Plains, N.Y.).
