The Westville Quality Market has paid a fine of $900 and will have its liquor permit suspended for three days after a violation of several state statutes and regulations.
The state Liquor Control Commission announced that outcome on Wednesday.
According to a posting on the commission’s website, the Westville Quality Market at the corner of Elm Street and Alden Avenue will have its license suspended between Nov. 8 and Nov. 10. The suspension, along with fine of $900, was imposed as a result of four alleged violations, including sale to a minor, “permit not recorded,” “permit to be framed and hung,” and “permit to be posted.”
Reached on Wednesday, store manager Mike Patel said the fine and suspension come from a sale last year. An underage buyer came in during a busy time of day and Patel neglected to check ID, he said.
That was the first and only time the store has had a problem with Liquor Control. He said the store’s permit is now properly posted.

“Jedi Knight” Puts “Black” In Prison For Three Years
Connecticut’s U.S. Attorney announced Wednesday that 41-year-old James “Black” Grier was sentenced to three years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for having a gun as a convicted felon. The New Havener pleaded guilty to that charge on Aug. 9.
Grier’s arrest is part of “Operation Jedi Knight,” an investigation of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the New Haven police department. The investigation involved purchases of crack and guns and focused on several neighborhoods that had experienced increased levels of street violence and gang activity. The operation resulted in 28 arrests.
According to court documents and statements, Grier met with an undercover drug agent on June 17, 2009 at the Brook Hollow apartment complex on Eastern Street. He sold a Hi-Point .45 caliber handgun and 12 rounds of ammunition to the agent. Grier was a convicted felon.
