Fierce Blizzard Hits Branford

A major blizzard with strong frigid winds hit Branford early Thursday morning. According to meteorologists, the storm is expected to undergo rapid strengthening, referred to as bombogenesis or a bomb cyclone. The Weather Channel, which thrives on such reporting, dubbed the storm, Grayson.” Despite the television catching terms it seems a lot like a strong Nor’easter to us.

Meteorologists say winds are gusting in excess of 50 mph. Tides are a little higher than normal.

All Branford schools are closed and public activities and meetings have been canceled for today.

New BB Coach Takes First Loss in Stride

It was not the way new boys’ basketball coach Chris Burnham would have preferred to start his tenure at Branford High School, losing to Lyman Hall in the Hornets season opener 61 – 37. But a win came a week or so later.

Burnham succeeded Jake Palluzzi (pictured at right), who coached the Hornets for 29 years, winning 302 games at Branford; this was his first game at the helm. Prior to Branford, Palluzzi was the coach at North Branford for four years where he had 45 additional victories. He also serves as co-athletic director at Branford.

Bob Esposito of Branford Book & Card Shoppe recalled his first day of store ownership. I couldn’t sleep. I had my keys in place and hoped my car would start,” he said.

The last day of 2017 will mark the end of a 44-year Branford tradition. Dec. 31 will be the last day of business for Branford Book and Card Shoppe.

Home Is Lost, But Kitty Is Saved in Branford Fire

A specially designed feline oxygen mask was instrumental in saving the life of a cat caught up in a house fire this week.

Firefighters responded to a heavy fire at 19 Leetes Island Road, Paved Lane Trailer Park, on Tuesday afternoon after the occupant called 911 to report a fire coming from behind the furnace. The occupants were trying to save their three cats but had to leave the house due to heavy smoke.

State Assembly, Town Praise Branford’s Retiring Messiah Tenor

Before the start of the 30th anniversary of Branford’s Handel’s Messiah last Friday, state Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr., (pictured) presented Dr. Edward Hull, a tenor, with an honorary citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, commending Dr. Hull for his commitment to music as an opera singer and a teacher for many decades.

Boutique Hotel and Town Boardwalk Make Debut at P&Z

The Branford River took stage center at a P&Z Commission meeting last week as a boutique hotel named the Tidal Lodge was approved in spirit, and the town’s first boardwalk made its debut.

After listening to a presentation about the hotel, the P&Z voted unanimously to ask Town Planner Harry Smith to prepare a resolution to approve the hotel project.

Kennedy, Reed Recognized for Legislative Achievements

Local legislators, state Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr. (D‑12th District) and state Rep. Lonnie Reed (D‑102nd District), recently received awards acknowledging their work in the areas of the environment and life science research.

Reed is donating the stipend that comes with her award to BHCare, a non-profit headquartered in Branford that provides programs and counseling for individuals and families dealing with mental health and addiction challenges.

BOF Approves $5.4M Bonding for Blackstone Library Renovation

In a unanimous vote, the Board of Finance this week approved a $5.4 million dollar bond authorization for the renovation of the Blackstone Memorial Library. The BOF recommended the RTM do so as well.

In August, the BOF heard detailed plans from library officials on plans and funding for the library, plans that will bring the iconic 1896 library into the 21st century. The library provides a rich variety of resources for town residents, including computer services. Plans call for a 2,000-square-foot addition on the ground floor, and reconfiguration of many interior spaces throughout the library. The distinctive front entrance and steps will remain the same.

Building Commission Discusses Art at Walsh, Project Updates

The Public Building Commission (PBC) discussed art installations for the renovated Walsh Intermediate School and heard updates on Walsh and the new Community House/Senior Center at its meeting last week. 

Frank Carrano, former chair of the Board of Education, and Jeanette Mobeck of the Branford Arts and Cultural Alliance (BACA) recommended to the commission that a sundial now at the Early Learning Center (the former Pine Orchard School) be relocated to an appropriate space at Walsh, once the school is completed.

Will Coastal Issues Become a Key POCD Topic?

People will have another opportunity to make suggestions and ask questions about the update of the Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD) before the draft is compiled. In addition, a recent request centers on adding coastal issues to the topics of conservation, development and infrastructure.

After listening to requests for another public meeting, the POCD Steering Committee agreed Wednesday to schedule an open comment session. Town Planner Harry Smith said the meeting could be held in either February or March.

Wreaths Across America Makes for ‘Branford Proud’

Despite the inclement weather on Tuesday, many Branford residents came out to support the Wreaths Across America convoy as it passed through town on its journey from Harrington, Maine, to Arlington National Cemetery.

Norma and Roger Donlon are all smiles, wrapped in their new quilt.

The convoy was led by Medal of Honor recipient Roger Donlon and his wife Norma. He serves as the Grand Marshal of this year’s convoy to Arlington. Col. Donlon was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War.

We were overwhelmed and very proud when we pulled off Exit 55,” said Dottie Packer. She and her longtime friend and neighbor Pam Bold organized the stop in their home town. Packer is a retired Lieutenant Commander US Navy Nurse Corps, and Bold is a retired Chief Petty Officer, U.S Coast Guard.
