After college, two of her three kids received their most attractive job offers not in Connecticut but in New York City, and so have moved there.
That’s why, Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Susan Bysiewicz said, she wakes up every morning of her campaign thinking about what she can do to keep young people in Connecticut.
That rang a bell with 97-year-old Sylvia Rifkin, who also has children — make that grandchildren — who likewise have moved to New York to begin their careers.
The crew at the registrar of voters office caught a few winks after 2 a.m. Wednesday and were back at 200 Orange St. later in the morning slogging through mounds of uncounted ballots to arrive at the city’s official election results.
Maria Hunenko doesn’t “vote by party.” She voted in the Tuesday gubernatorial election based on what she learned in a TV commercial about one of the candidates’ personal wealth.

(Updated) Officials had to turn away 100 people who wanted to register and vote Tuesday, after a new law provided a lift for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and created a mob scene at City Hall.
The partisan warfare of Washington D.C. seemed a world away from New Haven’s Bishop Woods neighborhood, where a Republican candidate helped a leading Democrat make the connection she needed to hit polls around town.
A U.S. congresswoman danced the tarantella up and down the aisle kissing old friends as she goes. The majority leader of the State Senate handed out lovely green potholders from a canvas bag. And a state rep whose name is Bob happily distributed square sponges.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley made a rare public appearance in New Haven Sunday, vowing to fight for votes Tuesday on the urban battlefield where Democrat Dannel P. Malloy has staked his reelection hopes.
