Davis Academy for Arts & Design Innovation has put a pause on its before- and after-school programming — leading two parents to take to the Board of Education to plead for some way to bring back initiatives that helped their students with reading, socialization, and building connections with school staff and fellow classmates.

80 Degrees At School? Time To Go Home

After high heat and broken air conditioning systems sent students home early two days in a row last week, New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) Superintendent Madeline Negrón has established an extreme temperature protocol” that considers closing school buildings if classrooms get above 80 degrees.

Next up, she plans to put together a long-awaited district preventative maintenance program.

Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School Assistant Principal Talima Andrews-Harris remembered how, 22 years ago to the day, she arrived at her job as a first-grade teacher in Atlanta after having recently flown back south from her family’s home in Brooklyn. 

She recalled being excused from her classroom by a colleague, who let her know that she should get in touch with her New York City relatives — because, she’d soon find out, her home city had just been attacked.

Svetlana Frazeur had to pick up her daughter Lenochka from Pre‑K at Fair Haven School at noon on Wednesday — before rushing off to retrieve her son from Benjamin Jepson School, before rushing off to her 1 p.m. shift at an ALDI’s grocery store — as early dismissals due to high heat and broken air conditioning systems shuttered schools citywide.

Harriett Alfred stepped forward, running her right hand alongside a piano that had sat silent all summer. She took a deep breath, her face glowing in the morning sunlight. In the second row, senior Jamie Harris lifted her Spongebob-patterned nails to the desk, knowing exactly what was coming next. It was her last first day of high school, and she was ready to lead the charge.

Good mooor-ning!” Alfred belted. In a still-sleepy soprano, Harris answered, her voice blending with over a dozen for the first time in months. She was ready to be back.

Jomo Bartholomew with his seven- and thirteen-year-old kids: Start of school is "bittersweet" after such a fun summer.

Jomo Bartholomew is going to miss the summertime family fun of watching movies late at night and cooking breakfast together in the morning and visiting parks all over New Haven during the day alongside his two children. 

And so it was bittersweet” when he dropped off his seven- and thirteen-year-old kids for their first day of school Thursday morning, even as his family looks forward to the more stable routines of the school year ahead.

Still-Low Reading Scores Released, Debated

New state data shows that 87 percent of third graders in New Haven are reading below grade level, compared to 84 percent last year, while math and science scores among city public school students have slightly improved. 

School leaders have framed these results as an outgrowth of pandemic learning disruptions, while emphasizing that students are far more than their test results and touting a dramatic end-of-year improvement in attendance.

Track 2: Respect” by Aretha Franklin, for when politics tries to creep its way into the classroom.

Track 3: Livin’ on a Prayer” by Jon Bon Jovi, for January when we’re halfway there.”
