Alonzo Harvin remembered a “mother figure” who got him off drugs. Mabel Mincey remembered the caring pioneer who came to the hospital when her daughter was suffering with AIDS, back when most people didn’t know or want to know how to help.

The Board of Alders gave final approval to a deal to transform the defunct CT Transit bus garage on James Street, and it gave the OK for the city to accept a $1.2 million grant to advance bike ridership on the west side of town.
A crew bulldozed a condemned former longtime produce market and adjoining apartment house Monday, as the owner and the city debated what should take its place.

A troupe of Augusta Lewis Troup School middle schoolers took their cues from a 1967 speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr., in which he declared, “I come here tonight and plead with you, believe in yourself and believe that you’re somebody. Be proud of our heritage.”

Chapel West has done a remarkable job. Basically replacing the city as much as possible and providing services to us property owners. May I suggest the next step?
A crumbling government-subsidized housing complex in the Dwight neighborhood crawled with power-washers, construction workers and hazmat-suited cleaners Monday in response to an emergency order from the city’s building official.
Police charged a Yale student with failure to obey a school bus’s stop sign after she allegedly drove into a 7‑year-old boy at the corner of Orchard and Elm streets.
Griffin below her waterlogged bathroom ceiling at Antillean Manor.
The city has ordered that families be moved out of — and emergency repairs made to — moldy apartments in a crumbling federally subsidized cinderblock-and-concrete apartment complex … that is not Church Street South.

After helping to cut the ribbon Tuesday on a $40 million upscale apartment complex at the corner of Chapel and Howe, Mayor Toni Harp decided it’s time to rebrand a corner once known as New Haven’s red light district.
From her Orchard Street apartment Sherry Bryant has for years seen groups of masked dirt bike riders popping wheelies on the street on summer evenings. She got a closer look recently when a couple of those bikes and their riders slammed into her.

Seven-year-old Ramaya Glass goes to the dentist regularly and has the smile to prove it.
Some students at her school, Augusta Lewis Troup, don’t see a dentist. Yet. Starting this school year, they will have a chance at better oral health and having a smile like Ramaya’s.

Romei: 5 new cameras coming to Chapel West.
A man danced in daylight at the intersection of Chapel and Church as downtown police and security personnel tried coaxing him out of the street. Onlookers had pulled out their cell phones to record him — joined by the Town Green Special Services District.
In case you haven’t noticed, your comings and goings downtown and along Upper Chapel and Dwight are likely being recorded.
The new owner of the downtown Courtyard Marriott received a get-to-know you message from neighbors — an attempt to stop him from renewing his hotel’s liquor license.
