As two black leaders reflected on a past barrier to black freedom, they saw a current threat — not white supremacist’s lynchings, but black-on-black violence.
Young Westvillian Eva Heitmann helped plant blue iris.
She raised her eyes from her labors when someone called out, “It looks like planting rice in Southeast Asia!” But Stephanie FitzGerald knew very well where she was: Staking holes in the mud to insert Joe-Pye weed and other shallow water plants in the newly marshy meadow of the restored Edgewood Park Duck Pond.
Emergency workers made a sad discovery Wednesday night: A 33-year-old woman may have been dead a day or longer while her little daughter was with her in the apartment.

The Purim crowd at Beth El Keser Israel (BEKI).
The carnival-like atmosphere of the Jewish holiday of Purim was on display at synagogues in town as the one-day celebration began Wednesday night. People of all ages donned costumes to commemorate the story of Queen Esther, who helped her fellow Jews overcome a plot to exterminate them in the ancient Persian Empire.
In the wake of a reported assault of a yeshiva student on Thanksgiving, a New Haven rabbi has called upon the mayor for action — and raised the prospect of restarting armed citizen patrols in the Edgewood neighborhood.
(Updated with final results) Edgewood voters might have thought they kicked Alderman Marcus Paca out of office in the Democratic primary — but they found him back at the polls again, asking again for their vote.
As Jews across town put the finishing touches on backyard “sukkot,” Yeshiva of New Haven was instructing students on the finer points of one of the year’s most enjoyable Jewish holidays — including (in photo) inspecting a citron (“etrog”) that plays an important role.
Anat Weiner sent in these photos and the following write-up about an event at the Holocaust Memorial on Whalley Avenue. Click here and here for previous stories and background about the memorial.
The kids skateboarding at Edgewood Park won’t have to cross Whalley to grab potato chips to snack — once the apple and cherry trees Semi Semi-Dikoko and his neighbors plant this weekend mature and bloom.

Somebody killed Ryan Barnaby, the 34-year-old man found near the duck pond in Edgewood Park night night, according to the state’s chief medical examiner.

Sgt. David Guliuzza taped off the crime scene Tuesday.
If the man found in Edgewood Park Tuesday was a suicide victim, the gun he used may have been taken from the scene after his death, said Assistant Police Chief John Velleca.
Sgt. David Guliuzza stretched crime scene tape across Chapel Street.
Neighbors reported a shot in the park at 9:30 p.m. Monday. Police found a body more than five hours later, and were still searching for evidence the following morning.
