43-Year Tweed Lease, Expansion Deal OK'd

A planned expansion of Tweed New Haven took a big step forward Wednesday, as the Morris Cove airport’s board members voted to approve a new 43-year lease and development agreement with a private company that plans to invest $100 million in extending the runway and building a new, larger terminal on the East Haven side of the property.

That vote came as East Haven officials ramped up opposition to the expansion plans — with every town-appointed board member voting against the lease agreement, and the town’s mayor threatening a lawsuit, and even a street fight” if necessary, in order to stop this project from moving ahead.

Teen Remembered For Touching Many Lives

Two hundreds friends and family members Tuesday recalled the love and humor of multi-sport student athlete Zayne Ali Thomas, who touched the lives of hundreds including neighbors, classmates, teachers, teammates, and coaches. 

Zayne’s life was cut short at 15 years old last week after he was hit by a car on Townsend Avenue while riding his bike. Zayne was taken to the hospital after the crash, and died there days later.

Tweed-New Haven Airport’s fast-paced expansion of daily flights continued, with the announcement Tuesday that Avelo Airlines will now fly nonstop to the hubs of Chicago and Washington, D.C. as well as Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

Avelo Airlines announced plans to announce several” new destinations from Tweed in a matter of days, not weeks,” as the budget carrier celebrated 100 days of flying in and out of the Morris Cove-based regional airport.

Long-awaited deals on airport operations with Avports and with Uber, on the other hand, remain elusive.

Signs Point To Park Upgrades Across Town

The parks department received the go-ahead to proceed with a series of improvements throughout the city:

• A restoration of athletic facilities at Kimberly Field in the Hill.

• Replacing the aging and inadequate guardrails at the dangerous curve on Townsend Avenue by Pardee Sea Wall promenade facing the harbor.

• Enlarging signs at Scantlebury Park to ensure people know that only pickle ball and tennis are allowed on those spiffy new courts

• Creating uniform playground rule signs throughout the city, whose first rule is that Adult supervision is highly recommended.”

“Spirit Of The Havens” Takes Flight

It’s a beautiful day to fly,” the pilot said over the intercom.

Over 100 passengers — including self-described aviation nerds” who had traveled from as far as Kansas and Denver for the ride, along with vacationers, reporters, and business boosters — packed together and clicked their seat belts. The Spirit of The Havens” taxied down the runway for its maiden two-hour-46-minute voyage from New Haven to Orlando. And a new era of local aviation was born.
