As a crowd of neighbors looked on, Mark Fenton ran into the middle of North Frontage Road near Orchard Street and jumped up and down because no cars were coming. Then he joined the crowd on the side of the road as a flood of cars, released by the traffic signal at Howe Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, zipped by at speeds well above the posted speed limit.
Human beings were seen jogging, walking, and hanging out at the urban renewal-devastated corner of Legion and Dwight — in an architectural sketch displayed at a groundbreaking for a project aiming to make that dream a reality.

Just past closing, the Hill’s Wilson branch library was undergoing a strange change. The librarians, packing their bags and putting on their coats, could hear rustling coming from the basement. An occasional giggle or squeal of delight floated up the narrow stairs, joined by the soft pitter-patter of doll-sized gym shoes and mini ballet flats. Someone rummaged around for a pint-sized cello.

With just a week to go until Election Day, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill told a room full of seniors that when it comes to voting, the crisis isn’t voter fraud. The real crisis is that not enough people are participating in the a fundamental part of democracy by voting.

The call went out for “1,000 men” to march through city neighborhoods. Some 30 showed up — and raised 1,000 men’s worth of spirit as they walked a 3.5 mile route through city neighborhoods to bring a message of peace to the steps of City Hall.
