(Analysis) Justin Elicker became the sole remaining challenger to Toni Harp for the mayor’s office Tuesday night by capturing five of New Haven’s highest-voting wards — while remaining practically invisible to voters in predominantly African-American neighborhoods.
Overcoming that math could prove his biggest challenge in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 5 general election.
Two aldermanic candidates drew fire from unions and firefighters in Tuesday’s Democratic primaries — and emerged victorious in two of the city’s hardest-fought elections.

Mayoral candidate Justin Elicker rose at 5 a.m. Tuesday, grabbed a big handful of trail mix, then headed out with his wife Natalie to vote at Wilbur Cross High High School. Alderman Santiago Berrios-Bones is preparing for the coming wave of retiring baby boomers. His primary election challenger, Thomas Burwell, wants to make sure they have good food to eat.
The usual pre-election get-out-the-vote party took place at the Bella Vista senior housing complex Sunday night. This time, organizers had to send vans to get the seniors there rather than just ask them to take the elevator downstairs.
Displaced Bella Vista tenants rallied to attend a political rally Sunday. Traditionally, a GOTV event is held at the housing complex prior to an election, since all the seniors who live there are in a central location. This year, the residents were not so captive. Instead of traveling down from their respective floors in the towers, many traveled by van from various motels where they have been housed since a mid-August fire.
Flames of accusation spread through Morris Cove Sunday night — over whether one mayoral candidate wants to endanger lives by closing the neighborhood firehouse, or whether his opponent concocted an election-eve smear to scare voters.
