A new raised obstruction slows a Chapel Street motorist.
Instead of zooming by as usual, drivers approached with caution a new square island in the middle of the street just a few feet away from the intersection of Chapel Street at Alden Avenue.
That new driving pattern is just what the city’s engineer, traffic chief and nearby neighbors had in mind.
Eric Rowe was having an otherwise normal week when, on his walk home from work, he made a discovery that rocked his boat: Four different New Haven bars offer dollar oysters on Wednesdays during happy hour.
For Rowe, an Indiana transplant who had developed an affinity for seafood, especially shellfish, after his move to the East Coast in 2012, this wasn’t just good news. It was cause for an oyster crawl. And some research into a one-time pearl of New Haven’s economy.

Santa Claus made his usual landing at the annual City Point holiday celebration, traditionally the earliest of numerous neighborhood Christmas celebrations scheduled to unfold in the next month across town.
City Point neighbors spent as much time disagreeing with each other as they did blasting state officials in their latest encounter over traffic problems caused by the rebuilding of I‑95.
Overlooking the harbor at Harbour Landing’s condo complex, the team overseeing the rebuilding I‑95 near told a gathering of some 60 angry City Point neighbors that the state might change some plans to relieve traffic jams — but it made no promises.
