‘Tis the season for annual meetings, political fund raisers and events that challenge us to find more hours to our days and more days to our weeks, not to mention speedier routes for traveling between these gatherings and more financial support for these worthy causes. It was refreshing to be invited to an event that promised personal positive gain after weeks spent improving the lives and/or status of others. Once again, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce provided us with the opportunity of life-long learning through their ongoing “Meet the Authors” series.

As the season of annual meetings and finger foods winds down, we can reflect on the achievements and impact that each organization, agency and institution has had in improving lives in our Greater New Haven Community. We have come to expect accountability and measurable results for our charitable dollars; we want to know how they are leveraged; we want to feel good about ourselves! We never felt better about ourselves and the future than we did on Thursday night, at the Bank of America Community Room, at the year-end festivities of The Youth Philanthropy Project, a United Way initiative.

There is no doubt that New Haven is the creative capital of Connecticut. The designation is due, in no small part, to the incredible work of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. In fostering a regional arts community, in collaboration with Market New Haven, the Town Green Special Services District, the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Yale’s Office of New Haven and State Affairs, it has become integral to the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. In its 46th year, the organization boasts of the inroads that have been made in stabilizing and ensuring the viability of our major arts organizations and institutions while continuing to increase services to area artists and focusing on audience development and appreciation.

Three hundred people came out to support Concepts for Adaptive Learning (CfAL), and thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous food, fine wine, and smooth sounds of jazz vocalist “Cookie” Thomas and his trio (pictured) at Anthony’s Ocean View! The generosity of Anthony, title sponsor DHL and the wine distributors along with ticket , auction and raffle sales, a total of $10,000 was raised to be used to benefit a program that helps increase the educational outcomes of New Haven public school children.

One of the joys of a city like New Haven is the ability to maintain long-term friendships and ties to people and institutions. Intergenerational loyalties to families and institutions may be one of the reasons for our strength as a community. This attribute is especially true in the Italian community and those of us fortunate enough to be considered “Family” in spite of our genetic ethnic origins. Monday night’s events were illustrative of this phenomenon. Fortunately, Anthony’s and Bella Notte are facilities within close proximity to each other, allowing some of the participants to support both.

The Dish actually got down and dirty on Sunday, at a group activity on Whalley Avenue at the New Haven Holocaust Memorial. The memorial, on the corner of West Park Avenue, in Edgewood Park, was built 30 years ago; it is the first such structure in the nation to be erected on public land and part of the proud legacy of Mayor Frank Logue. It is a tribute to the six million Jewish victims of the Nazi genocide.

United Illuminating and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce offered a warm Connecticut welcome to Jim Forgerson, the new president of UIL holdings (pictured at left beside his predecessor). The gracious hosts lit the room (pun intended) Tuesday night with community leaders from throughout their service area. Sage presented the most extraordinary array of food and dessert offerings that has been seen in a long time. Dave McCoart is a truly professional host; with a view of Long Island Sound and impeccable service, New Haven was shown in its very best light.
