| Mar 6, 2006 2:16 pm |Dick Blumenthal has marched in 17 St. Patrick’s Day parades in New Haven, and he’s ready for number 18. The parade’s committee honored the AG and Yale’s Michael Morand (in photo) at a ball aimed at raising money for the event this year. Bernadette Holadek and her husband Bill Holadek (below) were among those dancing the night away, along with Gone Dishin’, who has all the skinny.

BAR was bustling Wednesday for the second annual Play bash. It was a double celebration — of the youth-lifestyle weekly newspaper’s birthday, and of the Crown Street nightclub’s survival after a recent fire.

Saturday night, two of the new émigrés to Westville offered their time and talent to present a two-dimensional concert. Allison Kalloo and Lisa Cobham (pictured), backed by their musicians, alternated between jazz standards and operatic arias.

| Feb 24, 2006 2:06 pm |The New Haven Country Club was definitely the place to be on Thursday morning. As gracious and elegant hosts, the staff and management set a bountiful table for the members of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and the guests of the sponsoring organizations, Albertus Magnus College, Fidelity Investments and the New Haven Register.

| Feb 19, 2006 10:44 am |Westville has become alive with the sounds of people from all over town, other towns and other states. The reality is that downtown’s “entertainment district” and its activities and any other special tax district can look, with envy, at the transformation that is evidenced by the throngs that flock to this little community (without benefit
of salaried staff). The energy and vision of Thea Buxbaum and her assembled team have produced a vibrant Saturday nightlife that promises to expand. The focus is the wonderful Kehler Liddell Gallery and its ever changing mixed media shows and opening receptions, interspersed with concerts.

| Feb 16, 2006 10:02 am |All for the greater good, over 450 people gathered in celebration at the 500 Blake Street Cafe for the Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation luncheon for the United Way of Greater New Haven. In contrast to communities that suffered from Tsunami and Katrina “donor fatigue,” our organization realized and surpassed its goal of $6,000,000. Veronica Douglas (pictured) resumed her totally engaging role as Mistress of Ceremonies.

| Feb 15, 2006 9:40 am |Brazi’s was converted to Memory Lane this week, when the “Pioneers” of Community Mediation met with current staff and members of the Board of Directors to discuss plans for their upcoming (Sept. 14) 25th anniversary dinner and festivities. Lindy Gold and Carol Anastasio, co-chairs of the event, hosted members of the founders’ group convened. State Senator Marty Looney and Marty O’Connor (former NHFD now UNH prof) were joined by Rosemary Lemley (far left in photo), Susan Whetstone, Lou Perno, Pat Wallace and Janet Murphy. Scrapbooks and stories were liberally sprinkled! The enthusiasm and pride were palpable as Charlie Pillsbury (executive director, far right in photo), Steve Koch (associate director) Martha Murray, Susan Landon, Paul Hammer and Kathleen Conway took in the tales of their travails. It was with great pride that these folks recognized the growth and sustainability of Community Mediation and the importance of its programs.
The agency is making plans to move to a more central location as it continues to serve the region and the court system.

| Feb 9, 2006 9:20 am |Two statewide circles converged Wednesday night: passionate politicos and practitioners of the emerging new grassroots online journalism. They gathered in the spicy environs of the Rajun Cajun in Hartford’s North End for a celebration of CT News Junkie, the Independent’s sister news web site to the north. In less than a year of operation founder Dan Levine (pictured) has made the site the state’s go-to location for the skinny on state politics and government.

| Dec 20, 2005 2:29 pm |There is no room in New Haven that is more elegant than the ballroom of the Quinnipiack Club. The “traditions” of excellence that were originally established have continued since 1871; fortunately, other historic and exclusionary policies were abolished and the institution has become a warm and welcoming mecca for community festivities. Monday night, Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce board, staff and committee volunteers along with the Leadership Greater New Haven Advisory Board and the current class members were all guests of the Q.

The goal of creating enduring relationships between the two communities without the need for structure or formality was never more evident than at the web launch party to honor both LaVoz and the New Haven Independent.

Connecticut Attorney General Dick Blumenthal has timing. Moments after reports of a rigged raffle at a party Tuesday night to celebrate the launch of two independent (i.e. non-corporate-owned) news web sites — this one, and La Voz Hispana— Blumenthal made an appearance. The reports proved unfounded, but the AG found time to schmooze with La Voz publisher and Online Journalism Project board member Norma Rodriguez-Reyes (above). Noam Benson-Tilsen (at left), a typo-catcher in training from Westville, hobnobbed at the bash at La Voz’s Elm Street offices. Check out some of the other folks who made it to the party to have fun, nosh on scrumptious homemade Latino and kosher dishes, compete for door prizes, and support community journalism.

| Dec 8, 2005 10:46 am |The holiday season got off to a great start on Tuesday evening with the Business After Hours event sponsored by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. Tony Rescigno and company certainly have reinvented the organization’s networking opportunities with great panache. They are the place to “see and be seen” by both the “new kids on the block” and those who have been “around the block!”

| Dec 5, 2005 10:38 pm |The New Haven Lawn Club was the place to be on Friday afternoon. With a theme of Creative Collaborators, the ballroom was filled for the 2005 Arts Awards luncheon. There did not appear to be a “starving artist” among them; much to the credit of our region’s patrons, the Cultural Capital of Connecticut moniker has translated to financial stability of many of our arts organizations and individuals.

Enough gossiping about the relatives who did not join your holiday meal! If the question of what to do for the rest of the weekend comes to mind and thoughts of fighting throngs of frenzied shoppers do not excite you, we thought to offer some alternatives that will be easier to digest than the other overindulgences of Thanksgiving.

Who would have believed it! Downtown New Haven has come alive on Sunday nights. Parking has become a challenge as throngs line up for movies, theatre, sports bars, casual and fine dining, and some really fun entertainment.

You can always tell when there is an event that is especially important to the ever genial Anthony Delmonaco; he makes sure that canneloni replaces ziti and that the portions and displays of victuals are more enormous than usual!

| Nov 16, 2005 4:14 pm |Depending on your issue or preferences, the Greater New Haven area was the place to be in the early evening hours on Tuesday. Fresh air and hot air abounded on the steps of City Hall; whether they inhaled and exhaled for Jorge Perez or just to be part of the happenings, they were a vocal group of folks. Many of them travelled from other cities to express their curiosity or dismay. Some had done their own personal and professional battles with the Man who would be King. John Daniels and Jim Newton may not hablan espanol, but they were well understood!

Yes there are nights when fundraisers do not take you to the shores of Amarante’s and Anthony’s, so what to do? Sage, overlooking the New Haven harbor, offered another water view. With Cookie Roberts doing jazz vocals, backed up by a trio that included local legend Artie Dixon at the drums, the night looked promising. With due respect to the venue, you might say the world was our oyster!

A posh, supper soiree for the upper echelon of the “Arts Community” was held in a fabulous home in the East Rock silk stocking district last night. The group gathered to have an orchestrated conversation with Long Wharf’s artistic director, Gordon Edelstein, and Dean James Bundy of the Yale Drama School and the Yale Repertory Theatre.
