Signs of the times, outside of Wexler Grant's polling place.
Ponytails and pairs of glasses have been popping up all over parts of Dixwell and Newhallville, in a show of support for candidates in a race not many might typically pay close attention to — a summer primary for state representative.

Abdul Osmanu, Steve Winter, and Tarolyn Moore after the debate.
“Like Abdul just said…”
“I do kind of agree with Steve…”
“Tarolyn’s exactly right…”
“My answer was what he said!”
Phrases like these were heard frequently at a political debate on Thursday evening, where three state representative candidates agreed more than they disagreed on issues such as tenants’ rights, income inequality, teacher pay, and the role of deep listening in politics.
Blumenthal (right): VP pick Walz is the real deal.
“A straight-talking, plain-spoken Midwesterner [who] has every-day American values.”
That’s how U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal described Tim Walz on Tuesday morning as he welcomed the current Minnesota governor, and Blumenthal’s former Veterans’ Affairs Committee congressional colleague, as Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s new running mate.
Legal aid, the Room for All coalition, and Christian Community Action will be holding a candidate forum on Thursday in the runup to the Aug. 13 Democratic primary for the 94th General Assembly district state representative race.
Three candidates are on the ballot, and will be on the debate stage at Albertus Magnus College: Steve Winter, Abdul Osmanu, and Taroyln Moore. Early voting in that contest began on Monday.
See above for details, and click here, here, here, here, here, here, and here to read more about the race, which gives New Haven Democrats the first time in eight years to pick a new state legislator.

Steve Winter didn’t have to walk far from his second-floor City Hall office on Monday to cast his ballot on the first day of early voting — in a Democratic primary where he himself is a candidate for state representative.

Two “alders” checked in on a couple’s revived East Street deli, talked street improvements with a development official, blasted the news to constituents — and dreamed about what they want to be when they grow up.

Early local favorites: Harris (left) for prez; Murphy (right) for veep?
Top New Haven Democrats coalesced quickly Sunday behind Kamala Harris as their party’s presidential nominee now that Joe Biden has announced he will not seek reelection.
At least two local Dems, including one delegate to next month’s party convention, added U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (who often shows up on lists of potential future presidential candidates) as their favored running mate to take on the Donald Trump‑J.D. Vance Republican ticket.
Milwaukee — (Analysis) For the last night of the Republican National Convention, viewers turned on the television to see a series of scripted attempts to make a 78-year-old man wearing a diaper on his ear come across as the hulky champion of a prime time fight. Inside the Fiserv Forum convention hall, I saw a different show play out.
Canadian and Harley-Davidson rider Sean July stumbled upon the RNC meet-up: "It's cool that it's going on. I think Trump's cool."

A Republican ride?
Milwaukee – Ex‑U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and his cover band “The Diplomats” pulled up to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee during the third day of the Republican Nominating Convention to strut their stuff, show their support for Trump, and trigger Easy Rider sentimentalism with a rendition of Steppenwolf’s classic rocker “Born to Be Wild.”
Not that they're praising Democrats: Former Trump acting AG Matthew Whitaker, at left in photo with attendees after antitrust panel.
Milwaukee — Amid another day of Biden-bashing here at the Republican National Convention, a little-noticed breakout session Tuesday afternoon featured discussion of emerging common ground between some MAGA Republicans and liberal Democrats.

Milwaukee — Connecticut Republicans joined a convention floor full of delegates Monday in shouting “Yay!” as U.S. Sen. and Yale law grad J.D. Vance was unanimously nominated as GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s vice-presidential running mate.

Blumenthal at Monday's presser.
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal declined to speculate how the attempted assassination of former President Trump might affect the ongoing campaigns or the roiling issue of whether President Joe Biden should remain the Democratic Party’s flag-bearer.
He did say, “We need to come together to condemn all political violence and to stop it.”
Nadine Seiler: "I'm here protesting on behalf of Project 2025."
Milwaukee — While the attempted assassination of Donald Trump has muted his Democratic rivals, grassroots protesters from around the country descended here en masse for his presidential nominating convention as vocal as ever and determined to keep protest alive.
As Democrats nationwide pull back on criticizing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in the wake of Saturday’s attempted assassination, state Attorney General William Tong promised to continue to speak out about the high stakes of this year’s election.
“Saying that we’re in a fight for our democracy is not wrong, it’s true,” he said in New Haven on Monday. “We’re going to continue to do that.”
