Connecticut may have lost round one and two, but New Haven is not despairing in the race for federal education money — it’s looking ahead to the next competition.
Sophomores at the city’s environmental-themed charter school caught up to and exceeded district scores, as sophomores across the city improved on standardized tests.

When Wilbur Cross student Rachel Markey returns to school this fall, she’ll find a new “house” awaiting her, as the city’s largest public high school begins undergoing its own version of dramatic reform.
Using the test scores that came out Thursday, Superintendent Reggie Mayo drew a starting line for an ambitious race — for city students to catch up with their statewide counterparts in five years.

One school is getting a new home and a nearly 10-hour school day. At the other, teachers will send home five-minute DVDs introducing themselves to parents, while the principal aims to share her turnaround story with Oprah.
Teachers will show up an hour early to school, and bring their lunches into the student caf, when New Haven’s environmental-themed magnet school undergoes changes next year as part of the city’s school reform drive.
As the school board unanimously voted to extend Reginald Mayo’s contract, one educator hailed him as a “fabulous leader,” and the mayor promised three more “truly incredible years.”
