Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School Assistant Principal Talima Andrews-Harris remembered how, 22 years ago to the day, she arrived at her job as a first-grade teacher in Atlanta after having recently flown back south from her family’s home in Brooklyn.
She recalled being excused from her classroom by a colleague, who let her know that she should get in touch with her New York City relatives — because, she’d soon find out, her home city had just been attacked.
On the third day of the 2023 – 24 school year, Wilbur Cross sophomores Charlotte Herzog, Alma Barjamovic, and Maya Harpaz-Levi reminisced on a summer of travels to Denmark, Israel, Ireland, and Maine — while also celebrating their return to the city’s largest public high school, which they described as overflowing with opportunity, variety, and diversity.

Svetlana Frazeur had to pick up her daughter Lenochka from Pre‑K at Fair Haven School at noon on Wednesday — before rushing off to retrieve her son from Benjamin Jepson School, before rushing off to her 1 p.m. shift at an ALDI’s grocery store — as early dismissals due to high heat and broken air conditioning systems shuttered schools citywide.

Harriett Alfred stepped forward, running her right hand alongside a piano that had sat silent all summer. She took a deep breath, her face glowing in the morning sunlight. In the second row, senior Jamie Harris lifted her Spongebob-patterned nails to the desk, knowing exactly what was coming next. It was her last first day of high school, and she was ready to lead the charge.
“Good mooor-ning!” Alfred belted. In a still-sleepy soprano, Harris answered, her voice blending with over a dozen for the first time in months. She was ready to be back.

Jomo Bartholomew is going to miss the summertime family fun of watching movies late at night and cooking breakfast together in the morning and visiting parks all over New Haven during the day alongside his two children.
And so it was “bittersweet” when he dropped off his seven- and thirteen-year-old kids for their first day of school Thursday morning, even as his family looks forward to the more stable routines of the school year ahead.

In a bid to expand its restorative justice practices, Metropolitan Business Academy has put together a class for the second year in a row that focuses on helping high schoolers learn that “there are other ways to deal with harm.”
New state data shows that 87 percent of third graders in New Haven are reading below grade level, compared to 84 percent last year, while math and science scores among city public school students have slightly improved.
School leaders have framed these results as an outgrowth of pandemic learning disruptions, while emphasizing that students are far more than their test results and touting a dramatic end-of-year improvement in attendance.
The nation’s top education official, Miguel Cardona, offered a custom playlist with a song for every occasion for New Haven teachers as they get ready for the start of the school year on Thursday.
Track 1: “Vivir Mi Vida” by Marc Anthony, as a reminder to enjoy the work you do.
Track 2: “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, for when politics tries to creep its way into the classroom.
Track 3: “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Jon Bon Jovi, for January when “we’re halfway there.”
Track 4: “Valio La Pena” by Marc Anthony, to know it’s worth it.

When a child learns to read, they unlock an entire new world of possibilities in both learning and in life. Conversely, if a child does not learn to read or remains a struggling reader, difficulty and challenge are likely to follow.

The following write-up was submitted by Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of New Haven about a back-to-school fair that took place at Clinton Avenue School on Aug. 1.
Board of Education member Darnell Goldson raised those questions Monday during a press conference focused on just how little information the school board has received to date about the early summer cybercrime.
Hackers impersonating the city school district’s chief operating officer succeeded in stealing over $6 million in city funds that were largely meant to pay for New Haven school buses.
With the help of the FBI, the Elicker administration has clawed back more than half of that public money — as the city continues to investigate what exactly went wrong, and how to make sure such a cyberattack doesn’t happen again.
Last year, Dave Cruz-Bustamante would occasionally spend four out of six school-day hours sitting in a classroom with no teacher present.
This summer, the rising Wilbur Cross senior has rediscovered their love for learning at a five-week Yale University academic program — even as they’ve become more aware than ever of New Haven’s town-gown divide.
And next year, during their final year as a student representative on the Board of Education, they’re hoping to amplify student voices, rekindle their peers’ engagement with learning, and maybe spark a revolution along the way.
