Wednesday's virtual Development Commission meeting.
A business-boosting nonprofit is teaming up with the city to bring the gospel of New Haven on the road — or, rather, on the plane — to some of the 14 communities newly accessible via Avelo Airlines.
Going electric: Mayor Elicker pulls up in a borrowed Logan Prodigy.
Mayor Justin Elicker arrived on two wheels, of course, for an official kick-off to New Haven Bike Month — but for the first time, he did so with an electric assist.

So long, fares?
What if the current three-month CT Transit bus-fare holiday went on … forever?
Downtown/East Rock Alder Eli Sabin has raised that question, and thrown his support behind that outcome, with a newly submitted resolution that calls on the state to make riding the bus free for Connecticut residents, permanently.
Avelo’s expansion of daily flights from Tweed continued Thursday, with the announcement that the budget carrier will soon fly nonstop from New Haven to Wilmington, N.C.
As a new traffic-calming intersection has reopened at Orange Street and MLK Boulevard, old driving habits have persisted, at least for now: blowing through red lights.

Caroline Simmons, Stamford’s new mayor, wants any businesses interested in the city to email her at mayorsoffice@stamfordct.gov.
Just four months into the job, Mayor Simmons has become the city’s number one promoter. She joined “The Municipal Voice,” a co-production of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities and WNHHFM, to talk about what drew her to local government, what she was able to accomplish in her first 100 days and what she has her eyes on for the future.

Goodbye, flashing lights and detours. Hello, new protected and signalized intersection: Starting next week, a long-in-the-works Orange Street crossroads connecting the Hill and downtown will finally open — and officials will begin pursuing the next step of “Downtown Crossing.”
Paulina and Tony at the bus stop: Mom's ready to ride now, too.
The beginning of a three-month CT Transit bus-fare holiday has made getting around town easier, especially for young people who hustle from classes to jobs.
Tweed New Haven Airport’s smooth-gliding expansion plans hit some political turbulence, as East Haven Mayor Joseph Carfora announced that, “at this time,” he is opposed to the construction of a new terminal in his town.

Robert Boyd and Dasani Scott.
Robert Boyd stepped into his Dallas Cowboys slippers and took his granddaughter out on Orchard Street to the school bus stop — unaware they’d be staying there for close to an hour.
When the bus arrived, Boyd was grateful for another day that Dasani can attend Nathan Hale across town.
Giulietti at opening of pedestrian, cyclist-friendly stretch of Columbus Ave.
Joseph Giulietti has lots of money to put electric buses on the road — but he’s struggling to find enough people to drive them.
That encapsulates a broader challenge Giulietti, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), is taking on these days, a short-term problem mixed in with loads of long-term opportunity.
Bike lanes, or cars? Outside P&M Orange Street Market Thursday.
The city vowed to reconfigure Orange Street to stop drivers from “dooring” cyclists — while neighbors and business owners questioned whether the solution should involve removing half of the on-road parking.

Twenty-two new electric buses should hit the streets of New Haven, Hartford, Bridgeport, Waterbury, and Stamford over the next year and a half, thanks in part to a newly awarded $11.4 million federal grant to help the state transportation department wean itself off of fossil fuels.

Union Station (right) and its parking garage (far left).
Union Station parking levels still far below pre-pandemic peaks.
An average of 826 parking spaces at Union Station’s garage sat empty and unused every day in January — even as the city and the state plan to add 600 new “structured parking spaces” to the transit hub over the coming decades.

Closed sidewalk on Davis Street, waiting for White to repair it.
White: Cross-border comity.
Stephen White, Hamden’s new town engineer wants stronger sidewalks, safer crosswalks, and a continued partnership with his counterpart to the south, New Havener of the Year Giovanni Zinn.
White, a past project manager with New Haven’s engineering department under Zinn, is one of three appointees Mayor Lauren Garrett announced Monday will be moving into Government Center. Garrett also named Safija Farooqui the acting chief assessor and Jeffrey Naples assistant fire chief.
