As the nation approached its 100,000th Covid-19 fatality, New Haven recorded its 100th, a nonagenarian.
Mayor Justin Elicker announced the news Monday as part of an email-blasted and robocalled Memorial Day message.
“It is with sadness that I share the news that yesterday we lost our 100th resident to COVID-19. My condolences go out to so many members of our community for the losses of our loved one,” Elicker stated.
“As you consider how you and your family might celebrate today, please be responsible — use masks, practice social distancing. One resident lost is too many. 100 residents lost is beyond what we ever imagined. Your choices today and in the weeks to come will save lives. Be responsible. Thanks everyone.”
City Health Director Maritza Bond said the 100th New Havener to die from the disease was a 90-year-old woman.
At last count the city had 2,387 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
