A 10-year-old child was injured following an early morning shooting on Congress Avenue Tuesday.

Police Chief Karl Jacobson announced that shooting injury Tuesday morning at the end of an unrelated traffic-safety press conference.

He said that police responded to a ShotSpotter alert of six shots fired near Congress Avenue and Redfield Street at around 2:44 a.m. Tuesday.

A house near that intersection was hit by that gunfire. Inside a bedroom at the time was a 10-year-old and their mother, who were sleeping in the same bed. The 10-year-old suffered small cuts” to toes on both of feet. Jacobson said it’s unclear right now as to whether injuries were caused directly by a bullet or by shattered glass from a window broken by a bullet.

He said police believe the shooter — who fired from a driveway nearby — intended to shoot at that house, but did not intend to hit the 10-year-old victim.

Jacobson added that the child has been discharged from the hospital, and that police and Yale Child Study Center representatives have visited with the family. He said police have identified a suspect vehicle that may have been involved in this shooting. We’re very lucky that we don’t have one or two deceased people” following the shooting, he said.
