Man Shot Dead On Winthrop

A 29-year-old man died Tuesday morning after a Winthrop Avenue shooting.

The victim, Leron Vaughn, died at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Tuesday after sustaining a gunshot wound from five rounds fired on Winthrop — while another shooting victim was sent to the hospital for non-fatal injuries from a separate incident that took place earlier in the same night.

Police responded to the Winthrop Avenue scene around 1:30 a.m. after receiving an alert from ShotSpotter technology and multiple 911 calls. Witnesses reported two suspicious individuals fleeing the scene and running north on Winthrop. A K9 search was conducted, but yielded no leads, while detectives are exploring footage from nearby businesses.

Officers were dispatched to Woolsey Street hours earlier, around 9:30 p.m., following reports of a separate shooting. Officers discovered a crime scene at the side of a residence on the street. Moments later, a gunshot victim was dropped off at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

A press release from the New Haven Police Department noted that while officers were at the hospital for an unrelated incident, another gunshot victim walked into the facility, recounting that a man he’d met online lured him to an intersection by Ella Grasso Boulevard and Chapel Street and tried to rob him.

Police said they could not find additional information or evidence at the location. The Bridgeport Police Department reported another shooting in their city at around 9:45; the NHPD said it’s unclear whether the two incidents might be related.
