(Updated) A 21-year-old New Havener named Niygere Wicker was shot and killed while riding his dirt bike in the area of Ferry Street and Wolcott Street Wednesday afternoon.
That’s according to a press released published Wednesday evening by the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
The press release states that police were dispatched to Ferry and Wolcott in Fair Haven at around 12:03 p.m. in response to calls about a person shot.
“Callers reported that a male on a dirt bike had been shot by a person in a vehicle that appeared to be following the victim.” Officers arrived on scene, located the victim, later identified as Wicker, and established a crime scene.
Wicker was transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have identified a “suspect vehicle.”
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).
Wicker’s shooting death on Wednesday marks the city’s tenth homicide so far this year, and comes less than a week New Haven’s last shooting fatality, when 56-year-old John Reynolds was killed at Bella Vista last Friday.
