Officer Yonick Crawford caught a thief trying to make off with two 30-packs of Budweiser from the Amity Stop & Shop. Thieves at other west side locations had better luck escaping with a 55-inch TV and a Pee Wee Herman doll.
Those were some of the highlights of the latest round-up of police incidents in West Hills/West Rock/Westville/Amity/Beverly Hills/Amity, prepared by the district’s top cop, Lt. Rose Dell.
Her write-up follows:
FROM 1/26/19 to 2/2/19 POLICE RESPONDED TO 206 CALLS FOR SERVICE IN THE WESTVILLE/WEST HILLS SECTION OF NEW HAVEN. THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF NOTABLE INCIDENTS:
Sunday afternoon police responded to a residence on Forest Road to investigate damage to a vehicle. A vehicle was struck with what appeared to be pellets from a BB gun. The resident believed her neighbor may be to blame, since they had a spat over a parking spot the previous day. The neighbor denied the allegations and was angered by the accusations.
A resident on Central Avenue reported that her vehicle had been ransacked sometime overnight on 1/29. Some loose change was stolen and the driver’s side door handle was damaged.
On 1/30/19, shortly after midnight, a resident of a Fountain Street apartment complex heard noises in the basement as if someone was trying to drag something. Officers responded and found a broken window. They entered the basement and saw a washing machine unhooked, pulled away from the wall and missing the portion of the machine where the coins are inserted. A portion of the coin attachment was found outside the building in the grass.
On Friday at around 2 in the morning, Officer Romano was patrolling the Rockview Circle Housing complex when she saw a Honda Odyssey with the driver’s side window completely covered with a garbage bag. She recognized the vehicle as wanted by Branford Police Department in connection with numerous car break-ins that occurred in their town. Branford was contacted to retrieve the vehicle.
A resident of South Genesee Street reported that her apartment was broken into sometime in the last two weeks. A 55” television and a pack of paper towels were stolen. The crook may have experienced a bathroom emergency and left some unsightly and malodorous brown matter behind. Responding Officers not only found a mess on the floor, but soiled toilet paper in the trash and some droplets of blood on the sink. Forensic detectives collected evidence that will be sent to the lab to help determine the identity of the burglar.
Officer Crawford was working a security detail at Stop & Shop Supermarket on Amity Road when he saw a subject running out the entrance doors carrying two 30 packs of Budweiser. Officer Crawford chased the subject into the parking lot and made the apprehension. [A 57-year-old New Haven man] was arrested for the petty theft.
On 2/1/19, a resident of Laurel Road reported that he has been away for about a month and sometime over that period of time his house was burglarized. The thief made off with copper piping, some brass decorative items, a large Pee Wee Herman doll and two saws. The detectives were unable to process the scene for fingerprints since the rear door, which was the point of entry, had already been repaired.
A resident of Glenview Terrace reported that his safe was stolen out of his bedroom. The safe contained his social security card, passport, birth certificate and vehicle titles. There were no signs of forced entry, but he saw some suspicious individuals outside his home the day before.
On 2/2/19, just past midnight, police responded to Pond Lily Avenue to investigate a criminal mischief complaint. The resident reported that someone threw a padlock at her front window. She did not see the perpetrator but believes it may be an acquaintance who she owes $100.
