Winter’s waning weeks have brought have an unfamiliar flock to the Quinnipiac River: rowers.

The rowers belong to Yale’s two male crew teams. Local photographer Ian Christmann caught them in action.

The teams usually practice on the Housatonic River in Derby this time of year. But that river has been frozen. Hence the shift to Fair Haven’s waters.

Before beginning the Derby ritual in the early 1920s, the team took off from the old New Haven Boathouse (pictured; a replacement is in the works) to practice here in town.
