A year after Tropical Storm Irene destroyed the Sound School’s deck, a new deck is on the way.
A construction company called Concrete Creations was the lowest bidder, at $36,700, for the demolition and removal of the wood decking. The rebuilding process is still underway.
Jayson Zacks and Vincent Mauro move a piece of the old deck.
As of Thursday, the Concrete Creations crew had been working for three days. Vincent Mauro, one of the construction workers on site, said he anticipated the demolition and clean-up would be done early this week.

Marc Lyons, a contract director for AFB Construction Management, was on site on Thursday midday, with blueprints and a camera to assess the planning of the construction phase.

Kristin Andrews was exiting her office at Schooner, a next-door not-for-profit, and stopped to look at the project being done. Schooner and Sound share the deck. “It’s been a long year without a deck, and I’m happy we’re finally getting a new one,” she said.
Sound Assistant Principal Eric Yuhas said he hopes the project will be done by early October.
