Bullet Hits Achievement First High School

A real-life lesson about New Haven’s gun violence entered a classroom at Achievement First Amistad High School Thursday morning.

A bullet came through a window at the school at 580 Dixwell Ave. at 8:10 a.m., according to police spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff.

Thirty-five to 40 students were inside the building at the time, top neighborhood cop Lt. Manmeet Colon reported at Thursday’s police Compstat data-sharing meeting.

Fortunately no one was in the classroom affected, and no one was hurt.

Colon said the police have leads in investigating the case.

The gunfire, which originated on West Hazel Street, is not believed to have been intended for the school. The school still intends to add police presence in coming days and take steps to any emotional needs of the students in the wake of the incident, said Achievement First spokesperson Amanda Pinto. We take very seriously any event in our school that can present a threat to safety of our students.”
