Two retired assistant fire chiefs — Ralph Black and Anthony Calloway — are under consideration to serve as New Haven’s interim chief while the city conducts a national search for a permanent replacement for Allyn Wright.
Wright retires as chief on Jan. 4. (Read about that here.)
City officials expect to decide next week among three candidates for interim chief: Black, Calloway, and a female firefighter from New York.
Calloway retired from the department in 2006 after 27 years. Black also served 27 years before retiring in 2014.
The rumor mill swirled with reports Thursday that Black had been chosen as interim chief.
Chief Administrative Officer Mike Carter denied the rumor. “People saw me having coffee with him at Starbucks and started tweeting and texting,” he said. He wasn’t pleased.
