Officer Down — Not Out

For more than two decades Paul Bicki has helped citizens and his fellow cops in hours of need.” Now his hour has come — and the cops are rallying around him.

They’ve organized a benefit party for him next Wednesday night, Dec. 7, from 6 p.m. to midnight at VanDome on Hamilton Street to help him through a medical crisis.

Bicki won’t be there. He’ll be in Yale-New Haven’s Smilow Cancer Hospital, recovering from a second round of surgery.

Bicki, who has patrolled the Dwight-Kensington neighborhood since 1992, recently had a recurrence of rectal cancer. It spread to his lungs.

Paul is a fighter. He is a lion of a man. He has been a mentor and a leader in this police department for 23 years,” said his supervisor, Dwight District Manager Lt. Ray Hassett. He deserves and has the utmost respect of his fellow officers and all of the community. This event is to help him in his hour of need.”

Click here to read a story about Bicki’s career, about his view of the beat cop as a noble profession, about the relationships he has developed with younger officers, and about the dilemma he faced one night when deciding whether to climb into a window.

Tickets to the benefit cost $20. See the flyer below for details.
