Shaquan Chambers and Jasmine Bookert stood on line for an hour for a first taste of a New Haven delicacy — a grilled-cheese sandwich from the Caseus food truck.
The pair got the idea — and free coupons for the sandwiches — from people working the New Haven Green Wednesday afternoon for Liberty Bank. The bank, as part of a “Free Food! Take a break on us” promotion, arranged to pay for up to 200 free Caseus sandwiches during what has become a weekly celebration of local food and music.
Caseus parked the truck along Temple Street as part of the weekly CitySeed farmers market. Meanwhile, the weekly Blues, Berries & Jam free lunchtime series, which expanded this summer from five to eight weeks, featured a concert on a nearby stage.

… as well as for the line of lunchers waiting for their free Caseus sandwich. As many as 75 people at a time stood on the line.
Caseus served all 200 paid-for sandwiches, reported co-owner Tom Sobocinski. “We had to cut people off at the end. A bunch of people were kind of angry,” he said. “Any time we can give out something free, we’re happy to do it. We had a good time. I’m happy people got to come out and get free lunch.”
