Bomb Scare Empties Cross; Gas Leak Empties Terminal

Authorities cleared Wilbur Cross High School around 1 p.m. Monday because of a bomb scare.

Then police checked the building.

Police have cleared the building. Students will be allowed in 15 minutes,” schools spokeswoman Abbe Smith reported at 2:15 p.m.

Rather than go back inside, though, many students were already getting on buses to go home.

Meanwhile, the fire department was on the scene at the New Haven Terminal building at 100 Waterfront St. by the harbor, where construction workers hit a gas line, causing a gas leak and an evacuation of the premises.

The call came in around 1:30 p.m., according to Acting Deputy Fire Chief Ben Vargas.

The fire department evacuated the four-story brick building, which has offices on the first and fourth floors; and Greenleaf Biofuels next door. The gas company came to shut off the gas main.

Then we metered for residual gas in the area and inside of the buildings,” Vargas said. The building was deemed safe around 2:30, and people were allowed back in.
