The executive director of a New Haven charter school is urging parents to check themselves and their children for symptoms of Covid-19 following confirmation that a student contracted the coronavirus.

John Taylor, of K‑6 Booker T. Washington Academy, sent that message in a phone call to the parents Wednesday.

We unfortunately confirmed that one of our scholars tested positive,” Taylor told the Independent.

The student, who was hospitalized, is recovering well,” Taylor added.

Booker T, like other New Haven public schools, shut down after classes ended the Thursday before last. Taylor said the school nurse is now seeking to determine whether the student was infected before then, or since.

Either way, Taylor urged parents to check whether they or their children are exhibiting a dry cough, a fever, fatigue, or difficulty breathing, and if so to contact a doctor and get tested.

He also urged everyone to isolate in place for at least 14 days.

Statewide, 875 people have tested positive for Covid-19, 105 have been hospitalized, and 19 have died, as of the latest figures released Wednesday evening by the governor’s office.
