Hamden firefighters on scene Wednesday on Colonial Drive.

Boomer, safe from harm.

Thanks to firefighter Nelson Hwang, Boomer the pit bull mix is fine.

Hwang, Hamden’s deputy fire marshal, rescued Boomer while inside a house on fire at 109 Colonial Drive.

Hamden’s fire department responded to the fire at 109 Colonial Drive Wednesday at 1:49 p.m. They arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the rear of the house,” according to Fire Marshal Brian Dolan. No one was home at the time — except Boomer, whom Hwang discovered inside, then escorted outside and secured in the back.”

Firefighters quickly extinguished” the fire, which was in the attic and had started above the bathroom. No one was injured; the three adults who lived there are staying for now with relatives and receiving help from the Red Cross, according to Dolan.

Six adult New Haveners are also receiving help finding somewhere to live after a separate fire Tuesday night at 14 Elliot St. in the Hill neighborhood. The call for the single-alarm fire came in at 10:21 p.m. Thirty-six firefighters brought it under control in a half-hour, according to New Haven Assistant Fire Chief Justin McCarthy. No one was injured, he said; an investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing.”

Poor conditions at the house were the subject of a court hearing last week about an eviction. Read about that here.

I wouldn’t want to live in those conditions,” Judge John Cirello said at the hearing, referring to the list of issues the tenant raised about her rented room and the house more broadly.
