The Branford boys’ golf team won two matches last Monday at their home course, the Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club. With a score of 162 they defeated Foran, whose score was 177 and East Haven with 204. The two wins brought the Hornets record to a 9 – 9 at the time.
The 162 was the lowest score recorded for the year for Branford whose previous low was 170 in their last match against Fairfield Prep.
“No question in the match against Prep, and today against Foran and East Haven we played very well,” said coach Jen Kohut (pictured). “Our four top scores were by a senior, a junior, and two sophomores. That’s pretty good.”
The senior in the group is Liam Dean (pictured), who shot a one over par 38 on the front nine in the East Haven-Foran match. He tied for co-medalist along with Foran’s Chris Thomas. “Liam is pretty steady for us,” said Kohut. “He’s very dependable and very consistent. We’ll miss him when he graduates.”
Also playing well Monday for the Hornets were junior Max Bunton and sophomore Minsok Lee, both who shot 41 and sophomore David Engstrom who shot 42.
The Hornets’ fifth player of the day was Eunhee Lee. There are five matches, but only the scores of the top four count in the total.
Next up is the SCC tournament followed by the state championships that start next week and the week after.
