Wilbur Cross sophomore Bridget Steele is a super saver, and she has the iPad to prove it.
Steele (at center in photo) won an iPad from Start Bank, after participating in the community lender’s Youth@Work summer savings competition.
Steele worked over the summer at the Wilbur Cross print shop, as part of Youth@Work, the city’s summer jobs program for teens.
She also took part in Start Bank’s “Loot Camp” class, which teaches teens about saving. Loot Camp participants set up a direct-deposit account in their name, and set aside money earned from their summer jobs.
“In today’s world, where everyone is bombarded on a constant basis with advertising and temptations to spend their hard-earned dollars, it’s refreshing to see so many of the youth employed in the city of New Haven’s Youth@Work program, such as Ms. Steele, saved a good portion of the money they earned this summer,” Start Bank head Bill Placke said in a release. “This is why our partnership with Youth@Work is so important to us: we want to help these young men and women develop good savings habits now, and learn the language of finance.”
