A driver lost control of his car on George Street Tuesday, smashing into the entrance of Gateway Community College and topping a street light.
The dramatic scene unfolded slightly before noon.
The driver hit the curb in front of the southern entrance to Gateway, causing his car to “go airborne” before smashing into a window and toppling the streetlight, Fire Chief John Alston Jr. said at the scene.
The fire department’s Squad 2 and Engine 4 rushed to the scene.
Fire Lt. Thomas Colon, the first to arrive, said firefighters secured the car through wooden “cribbing,” then opened the door to retrieve the two people inside.
“They were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were speaking to us,” Colon said.
Fortunately, there was no wire exposed when the streetlight toppled, which otherwise could have made for a dangerous scene.
The block of George between Temple and Church was closed off and traffic rerouted.
