With a deadline looming days away, the mayor and lieutenant governor popped in to the Q House Tuesday to issue a plea to working families: Don’t leave money on the table.” Apply for the state childcare tax rebate.

The plea was issued at a press conference that Mayor Justin Elicker and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz held with LEAP Executive Director Henry Fernandez.

They noted that qualifying families have until only Sunday to apply for a state tax rebate of up to $250 per child under 18, up to three children.

The state legislature created the childcare tax rebate this year as part of the overall budget bill. You can apply here through the Department of Revenue Service’s website. If you need help applying, you can call 211 and United Way will connect you with a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant for free.

Who qualifies? The table below shows a breakdown for income thresholds.

Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz noted that the state has received about 90,000 applications from families — out of an estimated 350,000 who qualify.

Given the current rate of inflation on the heels of the Covid crisis, Bysiewicz said, the rebate can offer families help meeting bills for groceries, gas, and school supplies.

Fernandez said he and his team at LEAP (which operates the Q House) have sent out information about the rebate to the 1,500 families currently in the group’s database.
