CHOW on Down

Nov. 22, 2005

Who would have believed it! Downtown New Haven has come alive on Sunday nights. Parking has become a challenge as throngs line up for movies, theatre, sports bars, casual and fine dining, and some really fun entertainment.

The Cabaret at CHOW has become a hot spot and downtown destination among sophisticates as well as the easygoing crowd looking for a night on the town. Akin to the Joe’s Pub” cabaret venue in Manhattan (at the Public Theatre), CHOW is presenting the type of unique cabaret and eclectic entertainment not ordinarily seen in the Elm City. It has become the place to be on Sunday evenings. Children are regulars, too (with their parents in tow!). With a cozy interior, a lounge vibe, dim sum, and Sangria, CHOW (directly behind ZINC) is the perfect place for cabaret.

They even cross the Q” when their favorite sons and daughters are the headliners, as they did this week.

THE MUDFLATS: From Manhattan Transfer to the Mamas and the Papas, from Lazy River to Smokey Joe’s Caf√©,” the Mudflats served up a generous helping of favorite pop and rock tunes from the last half century. Together with some fine instrumental musicians, the group offered the same rich harmonies and lively rhythms that have entertained audiences in the region for years.

The Mudflats have been singing together in Stony Creek for about ten years. Although the cast of characters has changed from time to time, the spirit and intent remain always the same — to share a love of music with one another and offer it to others. When family, friends and community listen and enjoy, the pleasure and sense of fulfillment that come from a group effort of kindred spirits is multiplied. The group consists of two women and four men, spanning a couple of decades in age and coming from a diversity of backgrounds. Scientist, law professor, architect, writer, educator and developer join voices to experiment with musical styles and eras. The group: Neal Robison (Real Estate Developer), Linda Meyer (Law Professor), Dana Blanchard (Head of Admissions, Hopkins), David Brittelli (Chemist), David Connell (Contractor), Deborah Deford (Writer).

Chow might be just the right choice for unusual, light fare and entertainment after the chatter and indulgences of Thanksgiving crowds. Congratulations to Debbie and Donna for their inspired offerings to add to our vibrant New Haven scene.
