Communal Wellbeing Charted

The word is out, and the ink is dry, on New Haven’s sense of well-being.

That word comes in a new Community Wellbeing Index 2023 published by the nonprofit DataHaven. The organization crunched survey and demographic data to produce a nearly 100-page report on how our families and neighborhoods are faring when it comes to cash, housing, criminal justice, health and safety, and education.

Spoiler alert: The suburbs are doing better than the city.

And the rent — not to mention the housing sales prices — are way too damn high!

DataHaven produces these reports every three years; they become fodder for anyone studying the most pressing issues in our region, advocating for change, or crafting policy. Click here to download it.

DataHaven Senior Research Associate Kelly Davila spoke about the report during an interview on WNHH FM’s Dateline New Haven.” She also spoke about learning firsthand about the challenges of the city she has come to call home since moving here in 2019 for the DataHaven job: She tried to buy a home and put down roots. Then she gave up, because every time she was ready to put in an offer, an investor beat her by offering cash.
