Dozens of East Rockers showed up to the wrong place to vote Tuesday morning in the Democratic Party primary elections for mayor and city/town clerk.
Who can blame them? East Rock is a confusing place to vote these days.
At least two dozen voters showed up to Wilbur Cross High School only to learn they’re supposed to vote either at the Celentano School or at King/Robinson School, reported Anna Festa, a Ward 10 aldermanic candidate who was at the polls.
The main reason for the confusion: The Board of Aldermen redrew ward boundaries this year. Many voters who used to vote at Wilbur Cross now live in a new ward: Ward 19, which votes at Celentano, or Ward 21, which votes at King/Robinson.
A second reason for the confusion: Some Ward 19 voters still vote at Wilbur Cross … in even-numbered years, for statewide elections. They vote at Celentano for odd-numbered municipal-election years.
And other voters were confused for a third reason: Wilbur Cross is the combined polling place for Wards 9 and 10 again this year, even though the school is in Ward 10, not Ward 9. That’s because the East Rock Community Magnet School, the usual Ward 9, polling place, has been under reconstruction for years. It just reopened as a school — but not yet as a polling place.
Confused enough?
Here’s how to get unconfused: Click here to see where you vote. And call 203 – 964-8305 if you have any other questions or confusion.
And remember: Only registered Democrats may vote (legally) today. Every registered voter, of any party (or unaffiliated), can vote in the general election on Nov. 5.
