Cops said a dog was hospitalized after chasing two robbers that entered its master’s apartment.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the robbery victim had just returned to a basement apartment on Highland Street from the local corner store. After knocking at the door, two men in gloves and masks pushed their way into the apartment. They grabbed some cash from the kitchen counter.
Breaking loose from its chain, the victim’s pit bull chased the robbers down Highland Street towards Winchester Avenue. The dog suffered a head injury during the chase and was brought to an animal hospital.
In other police news, according to Avery:
At 5:25 p.m. on Wednesday a man was mugged behind the Wexler/Grant Community School on Foote Street. A man known as “Shakim” asked the victim for change for a 10-dollar bill. When the victim took out his money, Shakim took out a gun. He grabbed the cash and fled north.
Two people were mugged within a half hour of each other on Wednesday night. The victims’ descriptions of the attacker matched.
The first mugging happened at 9:10 p.m.. A man was getting into his car when another man approached him and asked for a light. He then pulled out a chrome revolver and demanded money. The victim handed over $200.
Just over 20 minutes later, at 9:33 p.m., a woman was asked for a light by a man who then pulled out a chrome revolver and demanded money. The victim handed over $20.
Police arrested a man wanted on pedophile charges on Monday. Officer John Palmer and Detective Wendy Barrett arrested the 54-year-old man after locating him at Wall and York Streets. Detective Dietrich Hernandez obtained the warrant after an investigation involving a child the man knew.
