New Haven’s representative in Washington, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, is worried about the country getting into “another unnecessary war” — and is vowing to help stop that from happening.
DeLauro made that vow in a video her office released Monday on Facebook in response to the U.S. drone strike in Iraq that killed Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani.
The video appears above. The text appears below.
Hello, this is Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. Last week, the United States military conducted airstrikes in Iraq that killed Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani. This operation marks an extremely serious moment in the United States actions in the Middle East. As the leader of the Quds Force, Soleimani was responsible for actions that have harmed and killed American personnel and our allies, and I condemn that.
We do not mourn the loss of Soleimani. But, the actions authorized by President Trump have put the lives of American military and diplomatic personnel at risk. The airstrikes authorized by President Trump may have accomplished their immediate tactical objective, but I am deeply concerned by the ripple effects this attack may have by destabilizing the region. Already, the United States has announced we will suspend the fight against ISIS, and Iraq’s Prime Minister and legislature have moved to expel our troops. In addition, Iranian leaders announced that they would no longer abide by the 2015 nuclear deal established between the United States, Iran, Members of the United Nations Security Council, and the European Union. Taken together, President Trump’s actions have increased the possibility of war and Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon. That is a dangerous path.
President Trump’s decision to conduct this operation without consultation from Congress and without a specific authorization for the use of military force is very troubling. Moving forward, every action must be carefully considered to ensure that we avoid bringing the United States into another deadly, protracted armed conflict. This week, the House is expected to vote on a resolution reasserting Congress’s oversight responsibilities and limiting the President’s ability to conduct military actions for months or years on end without Congressional approval.
As your Representative in Congress, I will never stop working to protect all Americans and prevent another unnecessary war.
Thank you.
