West Side Car Thefts Decrease

Over the last few weeks, we have seen a decrease in car break-ins. This has been achieved by a partnership between the police and the community to address this uptick. The police have increased patrols, and arrested car thieves while residents have provided me with video footage (used to ID perps and help pinpoint areas to deploy resources) and remembered to lock their vehicles. Let’s keep it up!”

So Lt. Rose Dell — the top West Hills/ Westville/ West Rock/ Amity/ Beverly Hills cop — informed neighbors this weekend.

Dell wrote that message as she released her latest weekly incident summary, which follows:

FROM 9/1/19 to 9/7/19 POLICE RESPONDED TO 195 CALLS FOR SERVICE IN THE WESTVILLE/WEST HILLS SECTION OF NEW HAVENTHE FOLLOWING ISBRIEF SUMMARY OF NOTABLE INCIDENTS:

On 9/1, a resident of the 200 block of Fitch Street reported that her Honda Civic was stolen from her driveway sometime overnight. Another vehicle was stolen around the same time period from the 1300 block of Whalley Avenue. The vehicle had a handgun in the glove box. On 9/5, a resident of Hilltop Road reported that two vehicles were stolen that were parked in front of her resident. Key fobs were left in the vehicles. There was also a laptop and $120 in one of the stolen vehicles. 

A vehicle parked at the apartment complex located at 400 Blake Street had all its tires removed overnight on 9/3. The vehicle was found propped on two milk crates.

Tuesday morning a resident of Lawncrest Road found that loose change and her Apple Ipod were stolen overnight from her Nissan Pathfinder.
On 9/4, a juvenile was arrested for breaking into a car on East Ramsdell Street. The juvenile broke the vehicle’s passenger side window and stole numerous items including debit cards, medical marijuana and cash. He was arrested for Burglary, Tampering with a Motor Vehicle, possession of Burglary Tools and other related charges. The juvenile has a history of arrests for car break-ins and stolen autos.

On 9/5, police responded to the 3 Judges Motel on the anonymous report of an overdose. The Fire Department located an unresponsive male on the bathroom floor of one of the hotel rooms. The male woke up after four doses of Narcan. He was transported to the hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

A resident of 400 Blake Street reported on Friday evening that on Tuesday someone entered her bedroom nightstand and stole $200. The front door had been locked and deadbolted, and the Officer could find no signs of forced entry. The resident contacted the management company to request that the locks be changed.

On Saturday evening, New Haven Police Detectives, with the assistance of the FBI and ATF, made numerous arrests in the Westville/West Hills area. A motor vehicle stop was conducted in the McConaughy Terrace Housing Complex. A loaded Ruger 9mm, stolen out of Bridgeport, along with some marijuana were found in the vehicle. All four occupants were charged with weapon and drug violations. Detectives stopped another vehicle that was spotted in the rear of the Regal Inn. The operator had numerous wax folds of heroin stuffed in his pants. He was arrested for the drugs and an outstanding domestic violence warrant. Lastly, an individual was issued a summons during a motor vehicle stop in the Manor for possession of marijuana.
